This superb, classic comedy, by Neil Simon was originally performed on
Broadway in 1965, starring Walter Matthau as Oscar and Art Carney as Felix.
It ran for 966 performances and won several Tony Awards, including Best Play.
In 1968 it was made into a successful movie with Matthau as Oscar and Jack Lemmon as Felix.
Felix Ungar has just broken up with his wife. Despondent, he goes to kill himself
but is saved by his friend Oscar Madison. With nowhere else to go,
Felix is urged by Oscar to move in with him, at least for a while.
The only problem is that Felix is neat, tidy, and neurotic, whereas Oscar is slovenly and casual.
A foolproof comic situation (allegedly based on a chapter in the life of Simon's brother Danny)
is kept alive and healthy by some of the funniest dialogue ever written.
"I can't take it anymore, Felix, I'm cracking up. Everything you do irritates me.
And when you're not here, the things I know you're gonna do when
you come in irritate me. You leave me little notes on my pillow.
Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow.
"We're all out of cornflakes. F.U."Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar!"
